{Cupcake Throwdown: Episode I} Green Goodies

I have an idea for a new Reality TV show. Everything is turned into reality TV these days, right?

Cupcake Throwdown OKC. Catchy, huh? A competition as to who can bake the meanest cupcake. I would totally watch.

There are cupcakeries sprouting up in OKC lately. A trend that hit other big cities first, and now is trickling on down to us. We have eaten at 5 of these cupcakeries. All different– all unique.

Episode 1 of the OKC Cupcake Throwdown focuses on Green Goodies by Tiffany.

Green Goodies is right smack dab in the middle of the hip & happening N. Western Ave District. When I walked in the cupcakery, I was very impressed with the decor. It is vintage, shabby-chic with mismatched tables & chairs. The chairs are “old” & do feel a little “fragile”. I was a little nervous I would sit in them & end up on my behind on the ground. But, nevertheless, they are charming. There are darling portraits on the walls of a little boy and his cupcake. Very artsy.

Green Goodies is a completely Peanut-Free Zone. They also have Vegan, Gluten-Free, & Organic varieties. High quality ingredients.

This is a BIG plus for people with dietary restrictions.

My sister & our kids were with me on this visit- so we ordered several kinds.

“E” chose the Organic Chocolate Birthday Cake {$3.25}. He devoured it! It looked very moist… really it just completely fell apart while he was trying to eat it. He loved the sprinkles.

“M” chose Organic Chocolate with Chocolate Frosting {$3.25}. See the fingerprint in the frosting? He could not wait for me to take a picture.

SisterKnowsBest chose the Organic Chocolate Berry {$3.25}. She said it was just “Ok”. Not her favorite, and she probably would not order it again.

I really wanted the Organic Red Velvet… BUT the blue-haired lady in front of us took the last 3. Drats!

So– because I am always the fan of the underdog… I chose this little strange looking fellow:

The Organic Blueberry Cupcake {$3.25}.

I was hopeful- because odd looking desserts are sometimes the best desserts.

Not this time!

For one, when the cupcakery lady gave me the cupcake she quietly murmured something like, “Oops! Better throw that one away!” (referring to the blueberry cupcake next to the blueberry cupcake she gave me). Then she quickly snagged the other cupcake out of the case and threw it in the trash. This made me a little uneasy.

For two, my cupcake was not cooked in the middle. I think. Either that, or it was really mushy & overly moist in the middle. Either way, not something I desire in a cupcake.

All of the cupcakes were served on “environmentally friendly” paper plates.  In my opinion, and you feel free to agree or disagree, I think eating off real plates would be a little more environmentally friendly & maybe make you feel better about just spending $15 on cupcakes. Just sayin’.

The cupcake sizing, compared to the other cupcakeries in town, were on the small side and the prices were on the large side. I do realize that organic ingredients do cost more, so the higher price is somewhat justified.

As I was leaving, I felt a little torn. I really wanted to like Green Goodies… really I did! I love the concept of a “green” cupcakery. I love the “look” & “feel” of the place. My boys loved the cupcakes. (Well, they love all cupcakes.)

I just felt a little disappointed. I plan on giving Green Goodies another try sometime when I’m cruising Western Ave. I’m hoping my first visit was just an “off” day for them.

Interesting. Very informative! I like your take. Of course you know my fav cupcakery. I’m sure you will review it soon.

  • maybe you should have asked for a refund or exchange on your cupcake? I think I would’ve!! :-)

Green Goodies is my favorite! Well, I have not tried Cuppies & Joe but actually do have plans to visit tomorrow night and then I can give a better review. I highly recommend visiting Green Goodies again and hopefully you have a better experience than the first time.

I have tried them all and by far green goodies is hands down the best! I strongly encourage you to try them again as it sounds like you went on an off day. Although I am a weekly customer and am NEVER dissapointed! Try the hostess warmed and you will go straight to heaven!

As the owner of Green Goodies, I wanted to apologize for any dissapoint and feel confident that if you come back you will not be sorry. I will personally give you free of charge 4 delicious cupcakes for your trouble and guarantee that this time you will be pleased and far from dissapointed:)

I have been to cupcake eateries all over the country and I have to say Green Goodies ranks among the best. This includes those popular places in San Francisco, L.A., Austin, D.C., and New York City.

Everytime I’ve had one, it was fresh, moist and delicious. I have also tried all the above mentioned places in OKC and these rank high above the others.

Either you had an off day, or your taste buds are broken.

  • Wow! What a comment!

As I recently wrote, I really liked a lot of things about Green Goodies. LOVE the organic/ vegan/ allergy-freindly concept (something OKC needed), LOVE the “look”, LOVE the cute little boy on the artwork…

BUT as far as that cupcake… all I can do is speak of that cupcake I was served. And that blueberry cupcake was mushy & squishy in the middle. Alison, there is absolutely NO WAY that blueberry cupcake I was served that day is one of the best cupcakes in all of America. Not even close.

I really welcome the comments– especially from Tiffany, the owner. (Hi Tiffany!) AND as I said in the blog post, I do plan on trying Green Goodies again. I’m definatley NOT an one strike & your out kind of gal! (You should see some of my culinary creations that get one bite & then trashed! My poor guinea pig of a hubby!) AND I will even pay for another cupcake! (Thanks for the free cupcakes offer, though!) I owned a retail store for 5 years & her response to my cupcake disappointment was EXACTLY what I would have done with a disappointed shopper. Way to go, Tiffany! You seem lovely & I can’t wait for you to change my mind!

Thanks to Kaitlin, I plan on trying the Hostess served warmed. (and I might just order the blueberry again… just to see if I happened to get the one “oops”).

STAY TUNED!!! I will definately amend my rating if I have a different experience!

    Goodbye for now~ MamaFoodie

I know I’m late to this cupcake battle, but Sprinkles cupcakery is pretty hard to beat, although the closest location is Dallas (or maybe Tulsa?). Call me old-fashioned, but the cupcakes at Sweete Memories on N. May are not to be beat! The plain old white on white are delicious, and they’re got lemon and other flavors that I can’t remember. They also have pumpkin cookies frosted with cream cheese that you should try if you go. The people who own Saturn Grill own this establishment, too.

Cool bolg when do you plan on Reviewing other cupcakes places in the area?

  • Brianna

Oh my goodness. I can’t believe someone served you that … whatever it is :) I have worked in many restaurants and that is really surprising. I have been so excited about checking Green Goodies out since I can no longer have milk, and I have read mostly good things tonight, but have read that when the owner is not “out front”, that the service can be quite bad. Disappointing, but it shows that there is room in Oklahoma City for another Vegan/G-Free/Organic Bakery.

I will still stop in, I realize this blog is from last year. Here’s hoping!

  • Brianna

I also do not think that was Tiffany the owner in your comment. The spelling is terrible and i suspect (& hope) that she would contact you personally. If it was for some odd reason the owner, did you get four delicious cupcakes free of charge?

    This isn’t even English:
“I wanted to apologize for any dissapoint”. Any who what?
